Humans Drive Rare Dolphin to Extinction

THE Yangtze River dolphin, until recently one of the most endangered species on the planet, has been declared officially extinct after an intensive survey of its natural habitat.

The freshwater marine mammal, which could weigh up to a quarter of a tonne, is the first large vertebrate forced to extinction by human activity in 50 years, and only the fourth time an entire evolutionary line of mammals has vanished from the face of the earth since 1500. 0808 05

Conservationists described the extinction as a “shocking tragedy”, caused not by active persecution but accidentally and carelessly through a combination of factors including unsustainable fishing and mass shipping.

In the 1950s the Yangtze had a population of thousands of freshwater dolphins, but their numbers declined dramatically when China industrialised and transformed the Yangtze into a crowded artery of mass shipping, fishing and power generation. A survey in 1999 estimated the population was just 13.

Historically, the species achieved nearly demi-god status among fishermen who recounted tales of dolphins being reincarnations of drowned princesses.

Sam Turvey, a biologist at London Zoo, worked with Chinese government scientists to survey the Yangtze downstream of the giant Three Gorges Dam. The researchers hoped that if any dolphins were spotted, they could be taken to a reserve.

But at the end of the survey, they had neither seen nor heard any sign of the dolphins, according to their report in the journal, Biology Letters.

“The hopes of each person on the survey died at different points; everyone had a moment of realisation that we weren’t going to find anything,” Dr Turvey said.

On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed.
Is not nationalism — that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder — one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred?
These ways of thinking — cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on — have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power.
National spirit can be benign in a country that is small and lacking both in military power and a hunger for expansion (Switzerland, Norway, Costa Rica and many more). But in a nation like ours — huge, possessing thousands of weapons of mass destruction — what might have been harmless pride becomes an arrogant nationalism dangerous to others and to ourselves.
Our citizenry has been brought up to see our nation as different from others, an exception in the world, uniquely moral, expanding into other lands in order to bring civilization, liberty, democracy.
That self-deception started early.
When the first English settlers moved into Indian land in Massachusetts Bay and were resisted, the violence escalated into war with the Pequot Indians. The killing of Indians was seen as approved by God, the taking of land as commanded by the Bible. The Puritans cited one of the Psalms, which says: “Ask of me, and I shall give thee, the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the Earth for thy possession.”
When the English set fire to a Pequot village and massacred men, women and children, the Puritan theologian Cotton Mather said: “It was supposed that no less than 600 Pequot souls were brought down to hell that day.”
On the eve of the Mexican War, an American journalist declared it our “Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence.” After the invasion of Mexico began, The New York Herald announced: “We believe it is a part of our destiny to civilize that beautiful country.”
It was always supposedly for benign purposes that our country went to
war.
We invaded Cuba in 1898 to liberate the Cubans, and went to war in the Philippines shortly after, as President McKinley put it, “to civilize and Christianize” the Filipino people.
As our armies were committing massacres in the Philippines (at least 600,000 Filipinos died in a few years of conflict), Elihu Root, our secretary of war, was saying: “The American soldier is different from all other soldiers of all other countries since the war began. He is the advance guard of liberty and justice, of law and order, and of peace and happiness.”
We see in Iraq that our soldiers are not different. They have, perhaps against their better nature, killed thousands of Iraq civilians. And some soldiers have shown themselves capable of brutality, of torture.
Yet they are victims, too, of our government’s lies.
How many times have we heard President Bush tell the troops that if they die, if they return without arms or legs, or blinded, it is for “liberty,” for “democracy”?
One of the effects of nationalist thinking is a loss of a sense of proportion. The killing of 2,300 people at Pearl Harbor becomes the justification for killing 240,000 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The killing of 3,000 people on Sept. 11 becomes the justification for killing tens of thousands of people in Afghanistan and Iraq.
And nationalism is given a special virulence when it is said to be blessed by Providence. Today we have a president, invading two countries in four years, who announced on the campaign trail in 2004 that God speaks through him.
We need to refute the idea that our nation is different from, morally superior to, the other imperial powers of world history.
We need to assert our allegiance to the human race, and not to any one nation.

New York, NY – Today members of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) staged simulation military operations throughout the New York City area to give fellow Americans a glimpse of the day-to-day realities of the Iraq War.
“By reenacting what we’ve been through in Iraq we hope to inspire more of our fellow Americans to act to end the war now,” said IVAW member Adam Kokesh. Actual veterans of the conflict in Iraq played their part of American service members, dramatically interacting with non-veteran supporters playing civilians.
In full uniform IVAW members performed searches, detentions, squad patrol, and crowd control operations in locations that included Central Park, Times Square, Union Square and Grand Army Plaza. They also stopped at Ground Zero for a solemn ceremony.
This day coincides with a national observance of Memorial Day (Monday, May 28), which bears particular significance in the midst of the fifth year of a war that has claimed the lives of over 3,300 American service members and over 655,000 Iraqis.
“This Administration should expect to see more of us – soldiers and veterans tired of the lies. We’re going to make the truth of this war visible,” said IVAW member and Operation First Casualty participant Paul Abernathy.

Last week also marked another crucial turning point in our anti-war work. Congress had a chance to reflect the overwhelming public sentiment against the war in Iraq by voting on a bill that calls for troops to begin withdrawal in 90 days and complete it in 180 days. We were delighted to see 171 members of Congress vote for the bill, including the vast majority of Democrats and two Republicans. This is a victory for the anti-war movement--these votes were cast due to our non-stop pressure in the halls of Congress and districts around the country! To our great dismay, 59 Democrats refused to vote for an orderly redeployment of troops from Iraq. Six out of ten Americans want a timetable for withdrawal; among Democrats, that figure rises to over 90%. Moreover, a majority of the Iraqi Parliament just voted on a resolution for a timetable for withdrawal of US troops.

"I want her to hear that message and there was a woman in the audience who reached behind and got me in the jaw and had her hands in my mouth. There were two women who were guests of the hotel and also stood up and disrupted during Hillary's speech. We were detained for the rest of the event and we were sited and released after the event was over. What a small price to pay to be detained for a few hours. Educator Honored for Her Efforts on Behalf of Those with Disabilities
Jan Weiner Receives Memorial Scholarship Award

Because of her passion, dedication and research to fully include individuals with moderate and severe disabilities in all aspects of society, Jan Weiner has been given a distinguished honor by her peers.
Weiner, associate professor of special education, was presented with the Robert Gaylord-Ross Memorial Scholarship Award Feb. 3 at the 25th annual Cal-TASH conference in Manhattan Beach.

Cal-TASH is the California chapter of TASH, an international membership organization leading the way to inclusive communities through research, education and advocacy. There are more than 25 chapters worldwide with thousands of members from more than 30 countries.

“This award is a great honor,” said Weiner, a member of Cal State Fullerton’s faculty for 15 years. “It’s recognition by my colleagues and peers that they value my work and that I’ve established myself as a leader in this very small field.”

The award is in memory of the late Robert Gaylord-Ross, a professor of special education at Vanderbilt University committed to the idea of integrating people with or without disabilities.
“It is given to an outstanding scholar in the area of services and support for individuals with severe disabilities,” said June Downing, a Cal-TASH executive board member and a past president.

“Jan Weiner is being recognized by our state chapter due to her commitment to the field of individuals having moderate-severe disabilities and to her belief that all individuals, regardless of ability or disability, can and should learn together,” added Downing, professor of special education at Cal State Northridge.

Belinda Karge, CSUF professor of special education, said Weiner, whom she has worked with for more than a decade, is deserving of the honor. “She has spent many hours in the field — in our case, this is the public school classroom — working to support children with disabilities,” Karge said.

“The type of research she conducts takes time and access to classrooms. She is a stellar researcher and wonderful colleague.”

An estimated 10 percent of the U.S. population has disabilities, Weiner said, adding that of these individuals, about 1 percent have severe disabilities.

“These are people who have a lot of needs and are challenged with multiple disabilities,” she said.

More than 30 years ago, Weiner landed her first job teaching children with disabilities at a private residential school in Massachusetts. She came to Southern California in 1980 for a vacation and decided to stay, later getting a job as a special education teacher at a Riverside County elementary school.

While working for the Riverside County School District, she first learned about integration practices, now called inclusion. “I then started a crusade to have children with disabilities go to school with children who don’t have disabilities by providing them with the support they need to be successful academically and socially.”
Weiner also has taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara and State University of New York. She holds an undergraduate degree in psychology, master’s degrees in special education and education administration and earned her doctorate at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1992.

Weiner, who is program coordinator for the Moderate/Severe Specialist credential, joined Cal State Fullerton when the Special Education Department had only four faculty members, she recalled. Today, the department has 11 full-time faculty.

Through her work and research, Weiner continues to develop service delivery models, curriculum and best practices to improve social obstacles often faced by people with disabilities.
“What I try to do is work to make sure these individuals are included in mainstream society and are seen as integral, contributing members to society,” she said.

24 Hour Memorial and Vigil 3000 + American Deaths in Iraq

Military Family Speaks Out will be commemorating the fact that today over 3,000 American
soldiers and 600,000 Iraqis have died in this senseless war. To honor the soldiers and civilians
that have died, we will be tying 3,000 small crosses, (some with Star of David’s and Crescent
moons), to a long chain link fence with black ribbon. We plan to have this memorial up from 8:00
AM Saturday Jan 6th to 9:00 AM Sunday Jan 7th and invite you to come and pay tribute to our fallen
soldiers by helping us setup the crosses and participating in any or all of the events listed below.
In order to protect our memorial, we will need people to help guard the memorial overnight and
share in our collective mourning. Everyone is welcome.

Speakers include members of Military Families Speak Out, Gold Star Families
Speak Out, Gold Star Families for Peace, Veterans for Peace, Iraq Veterans, and
other special guests to be announced.

-9am Begin set up of 3,000 + memorials
-Noon Invocation and dedication / Remembrance and Recitation of Names
-4pm Sunset Service and Press Conference
-6pm MFSO Catered Sidewalk Cafe
-8pm-8am Security Vigil with sing-along’s, music, and special guests

Sunday January 7th
-8am Benediction and Breakfast - Take down of the crosses

Bring candles, lanterns, warm clothing, chairs, blankets and hope for all of us
who are witnessing the daily death toll that is taking place, the high cost of war,
and praying for peace in the coming year.
Gold Star Families, Veterans and Military Families will be on hand to discuss the
costs of this war.
